Angthong - Wat Thanon

This temple was constructed around 1780 during the Thonburiera.  A wooden Buddha image in the standing posture, standing over 2 meters tall, is enshrined in the Wihan (image hall), and is called Luang Pho Phra Phut Rampueng.

According to Thailand’s Royal chronicles, a raft carrying the Buddha image floated along the river, and mysteriously stopped in front of this temple and would not float any further. Phra Thong Yu, the then-abbot, discovered the engraved wooden Buddha image on the raft. The wise monk offered sacrifices to the Buddha image before moving the statue from the river to be enshrined in the temple.

Locals and visitors pay homage to the image by attempting to stand eggs upright in front of the Buddha image. Those who succeed, are granted good fortune. Those whose wishes are granted by the image make offerings of boiled eggs and flower garlands. Another attraction is the floating century-old Buddha footprint, located on the ceiling of one of the temple’s halls.
