Angthong - Wat Chaiyo

Wat Chaiyo Worawihan, or Wat Ket Chaiyo, is a second-class royal monastery. It was at first a small temple when it was erected during the Ayutthaya period. Years later, during the reign of King Rama IV, a revered monk from WatRakhamkhositaram in Thonburi constructed a massive seated Buddha image out of white plaster in the temple.

King Rama V also paid homage to the temple, and ordered it renovated. Unfortunately, vibrations from the renovation work caused the ancient seated Buddha image to fall apart, and a new image was commissioned.

The current image is similar to an image at famed Wat Kalayanamit, with a height of nearly 23 meters and a lap width of over 16 meters. It was graciously named Phra Mahaphutthaphim, and celebrations commenced. In addition, a late 1800’s molded statue of Somdet PhraPhutthachan (To Phromrangsi) is also enshrined in at this temple.
